So, the football season in Europe is underway, and MLS games in the USA has been pretty exciting all summer! First there was that shocking turnaround in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final, when, despite going up 2-0, the US were beaten 2-4 by what is the best Mexican side we've seen in some time. Then we saw the various soccer tours by European giants like Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan. Manchester United once again played the MLS All-Stars as they did in 2010, with similar results - a big win for the English champions. Despite the MLS teams not faring as well as they'd have liked against the Europeans, there was still much to be happy about. The MLS schedule for the 2011-12 season is entering the exciting phase now, as we head towards the playoffs. The recent postponement of the Red Bulls vs. Galaxy game means we have to wait until October 4th to see how that one pans out, but you can bet the likes of Donovan, Beckham and Thierry Henry will make it a pretty special occasion.
There have been some interesting developments on the MLS rumors front recently, most notably the story that David Beckham will soon be on his way to London club Queens Park Rangers. The 36-year old ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder is said to feature heavily in QPR owner Tony Fernandes' plans to expand into Asia, and Fernandes' says Rangers can offer Becks "love, care and attention". It remains to be seen whether Beckham fancies a move to West London or prefers his starry ride at America's most glamorous MLS club. Another tasty morsel is the result from the recent 4-2 Toronto FC victory over Columbus Crew that stunned everyone. Toronto have been poor this season but their plucky show against the Crew will have given them some hope for the rest of the year. TFC remain down in the dumps, but the season's not over, and we should expect a few more surprises yet. This same weekend, we saw two other strong teams - Seattle Sounders and FC Dallas - with the Sounders going down 2-1 to Real Salt Lake and Dallas being beaten 2-0 by the New England Revolution. Tickets to Galaxy games won't be losing value though, because Beckham's current side are marching on with a 1-0 victory over Colorado Rapids. Looks like Beckham has some decisions to make, especially with North London club Tottenham Hotspur making overtures to him in addition to QPR.
